Jacksons Lane Shotokan Karate Club
Sensei Hatherall - 5th Dan
After being attacked one day by four boys whilst walking home from school, my mum said she worked with someone that did karate and did I fancy trying it. I have always loved sport so thought I'd give it a go and have never looked back.
I took my KYU gradings under Sensei Bob Poynton then graded to 1st Dan in 1985 under Sensei Poynton. In 2003 I had a break from karate and had my two children and returned to training in 2007. I continued to grade under Sensei Kawasoe up to my 4th Dan, then gained my 5th Dan in December 2023 under Sensei David Grice.
Karate is a very important part of my life as I have studied and trained Shotokan for over 40 years now. I truly love training and being challenged as much now as I did in the early days. Achieving your black belt is only the beginning of the learning, I am still learning nearly 40 years later.
There are no hidden secrets or easy ways to achieve excellence as a karateka. The only way to achieve this is to train regularly and hard - fitness and knowledge will come. Karate will build your confidence and you’ll gain vital life skills that will carry you through not only in Karate but every part of your life.
